UK launches public energy company to lead the green transition
On 15 May 2025, the Great British Energy Act received Royal Assent, officially creating Great British Energy (GBE), a new public company that will take a central role in the UK’s transition to clean energy.
This landmark legislation establishes GBE as a state-owned enterprise with a bold mission: to invest directly in offshore wind, hydrogen power, carbon capture, and other renewable energy solutions. The company will focus on building new infrastructure, scaling existing technologies, and helping the UK reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.
Why This Matters
For the first time in decades, the UK now has a publicly backed energy provider focused not on profit, but on affordability, energy security, and climate leadership. GBE is expected to accelerate investment in emerging technologies, increase domestic energy generation, and reduce exposure to volatile global energy markets.
The initiative is a response to growing public concern about energy costs, climate change, and foreign energy dependency. It also reflects the UK government’s ambition to become a global leader in clean energy innovation.
According to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, GBE will operate commercially but with a public mission. It will collaborate with local councils, private developers, and research institutions to deliver projects that support national climate goals while creating green jobs and economic growth.
Industry Reactions
Environmental groups, trade unions, and clean tech firms have largely welcomed the move. Many see it as a necessary step to meet the UK’s legally binding target of net zero emissions by 2050.
Rachel Simmons, director of the Renewable Futures Coalition, said:
“This is a clear signal that the UK is serious about taking control of its energy future. Public ownership gives us the ability to act quickly and strategically, rather than relying solely on private markets.”
Others have urged the government to ensure transparency, fairness, and community involvement as the company begins its operations.
What’s Next
GBE will begin with initial investments in offshore wind farms and hydrogen production hubs, particularly in areas with high renewable potential such as coastal Scotland, the North Sea, and the Humber region.
Further announcements are expected later this year regarding its long-term investment strategy and partnerships. The company will also explore opportunities to reinvest profits into local communities and support energy efficiency schemes for homes and businesses.
At Greenoverse CIC, we view the launch of Great British Energy as a pivotal moment in the national energy story. It reinforces the importance of local innovation, sustainable infrastructure, and public-private collaboration in building a clean and resilient energy system.
