UK Achieves Historic 50% Renewable Electricity in 2024

Clean energy takes the lead as the UK embraces a sustainable future

In a significant moment for the United Kingdom’s energy journey, renewable sources provided 50.4 percent of the country’s electricity in 2024, marking the first time clean energy surpassed fossil fuels in the national supply.

This achievement was largely powered by wind energy, which accounted for 29.2 percent of total electricity generation. Additional contributions came from solar power, bioenergy, and hydropower, reflecting a strong shift towards greener solutions.

At the same time, fossil fuel generation fell to just 31.8 percent, the lowest level ever recorded. The remainder of the electricity mix came from nuclear power and imports through international connections.

A New Chapter for British Energy

This milestone represents a major transformation in how the UK generates electricity. A decade ago, fossil fuels supplied more than 60 percent of the nation’s power. Today, a combination of progressive policies, technological advances, and public support has turned the tide.

Wind farms, especially those located offshore in regions like Scotland and East Anglia, led the growth. Solar installations also expanded rapidly, with over 1.8 million homes now equipped with rooftop panels. These developments have helped households cut energy bills and reduce emissions.

Bioenergy continues to play an important role, especially in maintaining consistent electricity supply when wind and sunlight are limited.

What Comes Next

Reaching this 50 percent milestone is only the beginning. Experts emphasise the need for a stronger electricity grid, more battery storage, and smarter energy use in homes and businesses.

“Clean generation is crucial, but we must also invest in systems that support flexibility and reliability,” says Dr Maya Lewis, a leading energy analyst. “Future growth depends on infrastructure and innovation at every level.”

New government strategies and reforms are already underway to support further expansion, reduce costs, and encourage British manufacturing of green technologies.

At Greenoverse CIC, we are proud to be part of this transition. Our work focuses on connecting communities with clean energy solutions, reducing carbon emissions, and making sustainable living more accessible and affordable.
